The Project

On Dundas Street, the Soper Park pedestrian underpass and the Gore Mutual retaining wall are both classified as heritage resources. During the preliminary planning phase, the Project Team consulted extensively with the Cambridge Heritage Advisory Committee and the Regional Heritage Planning Advisory Committee to assess alternatives in the vicinity of these heritage features. The proposed changes at Soper Park and at Gore Mutual have been endorsed by both of these heritage committees.

The Challenge

Due to the existing slope stability and the requirement to maintain the current heritage of the retaining wall, each stone was to be catalogued, removed and stored in a designated location. Maple Site Solutions Inc. was retained to provide a design, and to supply and install a permanent shoring system on a steep incline with a significant berm. Given the geometry and location of the existing retaining wall, a shoring system was required to support the bank prior to removal of the existing stones.

The Solution

To avoid further ground loss and additional movement of the existing heritage retaining wall, Maple Site Solutions Inc.  implemented a permanent secant wall, atop a designed working platform that allowed us to reach over and beyond the existing heritage retaining wall. Once complete, the retaining wall was then dismantled 1 stone at a time and put back in its original place, but as a cladding and not an earth retention structure.
