The Project

The City of Hamilton has undertaken a Vertical Wastewater Infrastructure Project with the objective of upgrading existing facilities to increase pumping and electrical capacity in order to accommodate growth in the Airport Employment Growth District (“AEGD”). The AEGD is a planned mixed-use development of over 550 hectares of land encompassing the John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport.

The Challenge

Due to the depth of the excavation required to install a new pumping station, and the existing saturated soil conditions, a temporary shoring system and dewatering plan was required.

The Solution

Maple Site Solutions Inc.  at time of tender, proposed a design, supply and install solution utilizing an unobstructed watertight secant wall (compression ring). This design provided several advantages for the contractor as they were able to minimize the requirement for dewatering and continuous excavation vs. a conventional dewatering, soldier pile and internally braced shoring system.
