The new fire station is a net zero facility measuring approximately 10,000 sq ft. Heating is supplied by a geothermal system and hydro is provided by solar panels that are installed on carport structures in the parking lot. This is the first fire station in Canada that is completely identified as “net zero energy”. The new station is equipped with 3 double drive through apparatus bays. The building is designed to post-disaster standards.
The Challenge
Although the carport canopies provide a significant energy benefit, there were high uplift loads. The loading requirements required a substantial foundation solution to counteract these loads. For economic reasons, a caisson foundation was designed.
The Solution
Maple Site Solutions Inc. was retained to supply and install caisson foundations.
